String Curtain Door

One curtain, 100 cm wide and 280 cm tall, in 100% polyester at 15 strings to the inch. Cut it to length with scissors.

The weight is the point. At 590g this hangs straight and settles quickly instead of drifting about like the light ones, and it feels stable rather than flimsy.

The top is a rod pocket, so it takes a tension rod, a pole or a wire. Nothing is drilled, which is why it works in a rental. Rods are not included.

It is made from eco-friendly polyester fibre that gives off no harmful substances in sunlight, so a sunny doorway is fine.

Black or white at the same price. It works on windows as well as doors, and it turns up at weddings, in cafes, offices and hotel receptions as much as in houses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a chain curtain?

Weight and fixing. A chain curtain is aluminium, heavier still, and it hangs on a header strip screwed to the frame. This hangs on a rod through a pocket, so nothing is drilled. Chain is the commercial answer; string is quieter and softer.

Does a rod come with it?

No. The rod pocket takes any rod, pole or wire, so most people use something they already have or buy a tension rod that needs no fixings at all.

How do I hang it without drilling?

A tension rod inside the door reveal. It braces against the two sides of the opening and holds the curtain with nothing screwed into anything.

Can I cut it shorter?

Yes, with ordinary scissors. Cut it to length, and cut it to shape too if the opening is not square.

Will the cut ends fray?

Polyester strings do not unravel the way a woven fabric does. Cut them cleanly with sharp scissors and leave them.

Why does the 590g weight matter?

Because light string curtains never hang straight. At 590g this one settles quickly, hangs plumb and moves less in a draught, which is what makes it look deliberate rather than temporary.

What is it made from?

100% polyester, at 15 strings to the inch. The fibre is eco-friendly and gives off no harmful substances in sunlight, so a doorway in full sun is fine.

Will it stop flies?

It works the same way a chain curtain does: a moving barrier that closes behind you. It is not a sealed screen, so treat it as a deterrent on a busy doorway rather than as a fly screen on a bedroom window.

Can I use it on a window?

Yes. The rod pocket works on a window as easily as a doorway, and plenty go up as room dividers instead.

Does it work as a room divider?

That is one of the more common uses. It marks a space without walling it off and it keeps light and air moving through.

Will the wind blow it about?

Less than a light one, because of the weight, but it is string and it moves. In an exposed doorway a chain curtain holds better.

Is it noisy?

No. That is the main thing it has over chain. Chain rattles, string does not.

Can pets and children walk through it?

Easily, and they work it out immediately. There is nothing to catch on and nothing to operate.

Does it tangle?

Not in normal use. Gather the strings loosely before washing, because that is when a string curtain tangles.

How do I wash it?

By hand in warm soapy water, gathered rather than loose, then hang it up to dry. Do not put it in a machine on its own.

Will it fade in the sun?

Polyester holds colour well and the fibre is made not to break down in sunlight. A doorway in full sun is what these are for.

Which colour should I pick?

Black or white, same price. White reads light and disappears against a pale wall. Black outlines the opening and shows less dirt in a busy doorway.

How wide a doorway does it cover?

One curtain is 100 cm wide. For a wider opening, hang two on the same rod and overlap them slightly in the middle.

How tall is it?

280 cm, which is taller than a standard doorway on purpose, so there is length to cut off rather than a gap at the bottom.

Should it touch the floor?

Just above it is usual, so it does not gather dust or get walked on. Hang it, mark it, take it down and cut it.

Can I use it outdoors?

On a covered patio or a porch, yes. Fully exposed to weather all year, it will not last as well as chain, which is aluminium.

Is it suitable for a cafe or a shop?

Yes, and it is used that way often, along with offices, hotel receptions and event spaces. For a commercial back door that gets constant traffic, chain is the tougher choice.

Does it give privacy?

Some, in the way any string curtain does. It breaks up a sightline without blocking it. Do not buy it as a screen.

Can I hang it in a caravan?

Yes, on a tension rod, and it weighs almost nothing to carry.

Will it work on an archway?

Yes. Cut it to the curve. That is easier with string than with almost any other kind of curtain.

Do I need more than one for a double doorway?

Two on one rod, overlapped in the middle by a few centimetres so there is no gap where they meet.

How long does delivery take?

Allow five to seven days. Demand runs hard through the warm months and we would rather quote the real number than the optimistic one.

Is delivery free?

Orders over EUR 50 ship free anywhere in Austria, which saves the EUR 22 express charge.

Can I hang it from the ceiling instead of the door frame?

Yes, on a wire or a track through the rod pocket. It is a common way to divide a room where there is no doorway to work with.

Will it stay clean in a doorway?

Polyester does not hold dirt the way a woven curtain does, and it washes by hand. In a busy or greasy doorway, black shows less than white.

Choosing a string curtain door

5 min read Magnetic Screens

What a string curtain is for

A doorway that gets used constantly and does not want a door in it. You walk at the curtain, the strings part, and they fall straight again behind you. Nothing opens, nothing latches, and nothing can be propped open on a hot afternoon.

That is the same argument as the chain curtain, and the two products differ in two ways: how they hang, and how loud they are.

The 590g matters more than it sounds

Most string curtains are light, and a light string curtain never quite hangs right. It drifts in a draught, it does not settle, and it always looks like it went up yesterday.

This one is 590g at 15 strings to the inch, in 100% polyester. The weight makes it hang plumb, sit still and drop back quickly once you are through. It is the whole difference between a curtain that reads as a deliberate choice and one that reads as a temporary fix.

The fibre is eco-friendly polyester that gives off no harmful substances in sunlight, so a doorway in full sun is exactly where it is meant to be.

Hanging it, with no drill

The top is a rod pocket and it takes any rod, pole or wire. Rods are not included, because most people already have something or would rather choose their own.

A tension rod inside the door reveal is the usual answer, and it means nothing at all is screwed into the frame. That is the practical reason to choose string over chain in a rented flat: the chain curtain needs two screws in the frame and this needs none.

Cutting it to fit

It comes 280 cm tall, which is longer than a standard doorway on purpose. Hang it, mark where you want it, take it down and cut the strings with ordinary scissors. Just clear of the floor is the usual choice so it does not gather dust or get trodden on.

Curved and awkward openings are easier here than with anything woven. An archway is simply a different cutting line.

One curtain is 100 cm wide. For a wide doorway, hang two on the same rod and overlap them a few centimetres in the middle so there is no gap where they meet.

Where these end up

Plenty go up with insects nowhere in the reasoning. As a room divider a string curtain marks a space without closing it, and it keeps light and air moving between the two halves.

They turn up at weddings, in coffee houses, offices, reception rooms and hotels as often as in houses. For a commercial back door taking constant traffic in the weather, the aluminium chain curtain is the tougher buy. For everywhere else, this is quieter and softer, and it costs less to hang because you do not need a drill.
